WACO, TEXAS - For the seventh time in program history, the Oklahoma State Equestrian team won the Big 12 Championship as the top-seeded Cowgirls defeated third-seeded TCU, 11-9, for the title Saturday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center.
The meet started with Fences, where the Cowgirls took the event 4-1 behind outstanding rides from Big 12 Fences Rider of the Year Katie Schell and reigning All-American Abigail Brayman.
Schell defeated Sydney Berube, 171-159, and Brayman took down Raegan Rast, 177-152. TCU’s lone point in Fences came via an Ashleigh Scully 154-146 win over Emma Pacyna.
Also picking up wins for OSU were Sydney North, who defeated Alex Beneson, 125-79, and Sydnie Ziegler, who finished off the Frogs with a 168-166 win over Isabella Baxter.
In Horsemanship, OSU took the event 3-2. The event began with Mattie Dukes defeating OSU’s Caroline Nielson, 145.5-133. The Cowgirls would respond by scoring three-straight points, led by Big 12 Horsemanship Rider of the Year Harley Huff’s defeat of Jessica McAllister, 156-155. Cowgirl Jojo Roberson dominated Giorgia Medows, winning her point, 156.5-141, and senior Sydnee Gemar scored the event-clinching point by way of a, 151.5-143., defeat of Anna Hauter. TCU scored the final point of the event when Shea Graham beat Cassidy Watters, 150.5-142.5.
The Cowgirls dropped Flat, 3-2. Schell was defeated by TCU’s Ashleigh Scully, 138-135, but Hope King even things by topping Jacey Albaugh, 152-134. Wynne Weatherly beat Cowgirl Katie Pelzel, 258-154, but Bryaman provided a needed OSU answer by defeating Isabella Baxter, 169-157. Shea Graham of TCU earned the Frogs' event-clinching point after taking down Hannah Coleman, 159-129.
The meet came down to Reining, where the Frogs took the contest 3-2, but the Cowgirls were able to secure the meet.
TCU claimed the first two points with Bella Andrews’s defeat of Cowgirl Jojo Roberson, 135-12,6 followed by Madyson Buchanan taking down Stephanie Helsen, 139.5-138. Hannah Lovrien picked up an OSU point by defeating Mattie Dukes,134.5-132.5, and TCU’s Sarah Armenta defeated Kinsey Jones, 133.5-132.
