This year the United States travel community will celebrate the 36th Annual National Travel and Tourism Week, May 5-11, by spotlighting the value travel holds for our economy, businesses, and personal well-being.

This year’s theme, “Travel Matters”, showcases travel’s contributions to economic growth and American jobs. Travel generated $2.5 trillion for the U.S. economy in 2018 across all U.S. industries.

Tax revenue from travel spending for federal, state, and local governments totaled $171 billion in 2018. Without these travel-generated tax revenues, each household would pay an average of $1,340 more in taxes every year to maintain the same level of services.

Travel supported 15.7 million American jobs in 2018 across all U.S. industries – that’s one in 10 American jobs, making travel the seventh largest employer in the private sector.

The travel industry is a primary driver in the U.S. economy, and an important part of our daily lives in Stillwater. When residents take pride in where they live, they become a community’s best ambassador by promoting their destination to friends and families. 54% of all leisure travel in the U.S. is to visit friends and family.

If you are a member of the Stillwater travel and tourism industry – hotels, home-sharing properties, bed and breakfasts, restaurants, diners, cafés, caterers, museums, attractions, meeting facilities, event venues, florists, retailers, recreation providers, trophy, audio-visual, sound, lighting, special effects services providers, and more  – you can find great ideas and resources to promote your place of business during National Travel and Tourism Week from the U.S. Travel Association.
