“The list of books for this series includes everything from one the oldest journey stories ever written to mid-century cult classics and a recent bestseller,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director.

The program for each book features a scholar who provides background and meaning to what has been read.  Afterwards, participants discuss the book in small groups.

“’The Let’s Talk About’ program structure is one of the best methods I have experienced for really understanding a book,” said Lynda Reynolds, library director. “You read on your own, and then have the benefit of hearing both a scholar’s insights, as well as the opinions of your fellow readers.”

Beginning Aug. 1, participants can register for the program and pick up the first book in the series, “The Odyssey” by Homer.

Thought to be written in the 8th century B.C.E., Homer’s epic poem follows Greek hero Odysseus through his long, arduous journey to be reunited with his wife and son.

The book will be discussed on Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. in a program led by scholar Dr. Harbour Winn, Director of the Center for Interpersonal Learning through Film and Literature and Professor of English at Oklahoma Christian University.

Subsequent books and the visiting scholar for each include:

  • Sept. 30, “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac, Dr. William Decker, Oklahoma Baptist University, Professor of English
  • Oct. 14, “Travels with Charley” by John Steinbeck, Dr. Trisha Yarbrough, East Central University, Professor of English
  • Oct. 28, “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance” by Robert M. Pirsig, Dr. Hugh Foley, Roger State University, Associate Professor in the School of Liberal Arts
  • Nov. 11, “The Life of Pi” by Yann Martel, Dr. Patricia Loughlin, University of Central Oklahoma, Professor of History

All programs will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Stillwater Public Library located at 1107 South Duck (12th and Duck).

Programs are free and open to the public and refreshments will be provided at each program. Reading the book is encouraged but not required to participate.
