STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men’s and women’s cross country teams kicked off the 2020 season with first-place and runner-up team finishes, respectively, this morning at the Cowboy Jamboree.

The 82nd annual Cowboy Jamboree started with a men’s 8K race, in which OSU placed five runners in the top 10 and three in the top five. The Oklahoma State men were led across the finish line by junior Isai Rodriguez, who finished second overall with a time of 24:01.4. Rodriguez was followed closely by third‑place finisher Victor Shitsama who clocked in at 24:06.7 and Ryan Smeeton in fifth place, who finished in 24:10.8.

Ryan Schoppe, Alex Maier, Jonas Price and Adam Dayani all had great days on the course as well, finishing in the top 15 and contributing to the Cowboys event win, the ninth-straight win for the Cowboys at the Cowboy Jamboree.

It was Taylor Roe who lead the way for the Cowgirls in the women’s 6K. The sophomore set a new personal best of 20:50.1, which earned her a second-place finish in the event. Right behind Roe was Gabby Hentemann. Her time of 21:38.2 earned her a in third-place finish.

Rounding out the Cowgirls in the top 15 was Sivan Auerbach who finished in 12th place with a time of 22:07.7 and Rilee Rigdon who crossed the finish line in 22:12.9 in 13th place.

Rodriguez and Roe made the most of their opportunities to compete amidst uncertainty about the cross country season, as did many of the athletes on the course.

“It was great, having our coaches, our staff and all the OSU athletic department help us get out here,” Rodriguez said. “It’s awesome to be able to go through the COVID-19 process and see all the sacrifice they put in for us just to get out here and race. A lot of credit to them.”

“I was just really excited to have the chance to be out here, we weren’t really sure coming in if we were going to have a season or not,” Roe said. “Or if we did have a season what would it look like. But I was just excited to go out there and run with my teammates.”

Moving forward, the Pokes will get right back to work to host the OSU Invitational on Oct. 17 at home on the OSU Cross Country Course.
