Theta Pond & Gardens
Overview
A stunning backdrop for any photo, this beautiful Oklahoma State University campus icon is the perfect place for an afternoon stroll. Built in 1895 with teams of horses helping to plow away the layers of soil, it was originally used as a reservoir drinking water for the horses kept on campus. Known as Horse Pond because of its proximity to the horse barn, it was renamed Theta Pond after nearby Kappa Alpha Theta sorority house when the barn burned in 1922.
Over the years, Theta Pond has played an integral role in campus life, becoming a centerpiece for peaceful reflection as well as rowdy fun including "ponding" sorority and fraternity pledges by tossing them into the water. During Homecoming Theta Pond is transformed into a center of school spirit with its lights and decorations being favorites of the Walk Around tradition. It is also fondly remembered by students, alumni and visitors as a uniquely romantic spot for date nights and proposals.
