This month's discussion: Radiation levels in the upper atmosphere are much greater than those we experience on the ground. This radiation comes primarily from high‑energy particles known as galactic cosmic rays, which originate outside our solar system as well as from energetic particles released by the sun. Regular exposure to this radiation can increase health risks for pilots, flight attendants, and frequent long‑distance air travelers. It can also affect aircraft electronics by causing both temporary disruptions and permanent damage to electronic components. During this installment of Research on Tap, VPR Sewell will talk with Eric Benton, Professor of Physics, about his research on the sources and characteristics of atmospheric radiation, how scientists model and measure it, and how Benton has developed and tested detectors to measure radiation exposure during aircraft flight.
