Overview

With a different researcher each month from the sciences, arts and humanities Research on Tap is an opportunity to have a conversation regarding their work and the impact it has on you and your community. We hope you will join us the third Monday of each month to enjoy some of Stillwater’s own local brew while chatting about some of the interesting research happening here on the OSU campus. The event begins with approximately 20 minutes of conversation between the Vice President of Research and the researcher, followed by questions and answer session with the audience.

GETTING OLD WITH FOREVER CHEMICALS - Dr. Matteo Minghetti, Associate Professor, Department of Biology

Our environment may be changing faster than our bodies can handle. Substances commonly called “forever chemicals” (like toxic metals at the Tar Creek Superfund site in northeast Oklahoma) and emerging pollutants (such as microplastics and PFAS) are known to interact with fish physiology. Ultimately, these substances may negatively impact human health. In this installment of OSU Research on Tap, VPR Kenneth Sewell will talk with Matteo Minghetti, Associate Professor of Biology, about his research on how these contaminants move, transform, and wreak cellular havoc. They will also discuss how Dr. Minghetti is developing alternatives to traditional animal testing to study these mechanisms. By understanding how these pollutants affect humans, we can better protect ecosystems and ourselves as we age in a world containing forever chemicals.
