Undefeated Cowboys Storm Back To Defeat 13th-Ranked Iowa State

Ames, Iowa - The third-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team defeated No. 13 Iowa State, 27-12, on Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum in the second-ever collegiate wrestling dual televised on ESPN.

The Cowboys, who are also a Big 12-best 8-0 in conference duals, are 11-0 for the second straight season, while Iowa State falls to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play. The victory is the 64th in the all-time over Iowa State and the 25th in Ames.

As they’ve done throughout the season, the Pokes won with the help of bonus points and aggressive scoring in the back half of the lineup. Oklahoma State has a +284-point differential through 11 matches, with an average margin of victory of 25.8 points.

“I think our back half has a lot of veterans who have been in tough duals and hold themselves to high expectations,” coach David Taylor said. “That’s been really valuable the last couple of matches. Those guys are the difference makers in close duals and the difference makers when we get into nationals.”

The Cowboys now have a bonus point percentage of 47% in duals this year, having won 134 bouts with bonus points. That percent would rank second all-time in Oklahoma State wrestling history if the season ended today.

The spark plug for the Cowboys, Troy Spratley, continued his successful weekend in Iowa with a 20-10 major decision over Ethan Perryman. The Cyclones bounced back though, rattling off four straight tight wins at 133, 141, 149 and 157, to go up 12-4 heading into the intermission.

As they did Friday night against Northern Iowa, the Cowboys used a strong performance from the back half of their lineup to rattle off five straight wins to close the dual, with four coming in bonus-point fashion.

The comeback started at 165 with OSU’s sixth-ranked Cameron Amine. Amine controlled the match throughout and earned a crucial three points for the Pokes, defeating Aiden Riggins, 11-4.

Next at 174, Oklahoma State’s Dean Hamiti rolled past ISU’s 23rd-ranked MJ Gaitan. Hamiti directed the pace of the match, using patience and control to rattle off five takedowns and a four-point near fall to tech fall Gaitan in just over five minutes and tie the dual at 12-12. Hamiti improves to 16-0 on the season, with 12 of those coming as bonus point wins and 11 coming against ranked opponents.

Three-time All-American Dustin Plott gave the Cowboys their first lead of the night next, and it was a lead that they would never give back. Plott, ranked third at 184 pounds, bounced back after a loss on Friday night with a major decision over No, 12 Evan Bockman to put the Pokes up four with two bouts remaining.

Following that, No. 7 Luke Surber mathematically clinched the match for Oklahoma State, getting out to a commanding lead,l before earning a win via injury default late in the third period. It marked Surber’s 16th win of the year, which is tied with Hamiti for the most on the roster.

OSU’s undefeated Wyatt Hendrickson,l closed out thrifty with a convincing win over Daniel Herrera. The two met at the CKLV Invitational in December, when Hendrickson routed Herrera with a 16-0 tech fall in just 4:17. Hendrickson had an almost identical performance in Ames Sunday, winning with a 16-0 tech fall, but this time in only 3:31. Hendrickson is now 15-0 on the year.

Now the Cowboys return to Stillwater as they take on No. 23 Missouri at Gallagher-Iba Arena for the final home dual of 2024-25, with the first match scheduled for Sunday at 2 p.m.
