The Oklahoma Visionaries Biennial Exhibit opens in Stillwater Thur., Nov. 6-Dec. 6, presenting artwork by 21 newly selected Oklahoma Visionary Artists, includingphotographs, videos, and artifacts from seven site-specific works. Also showcased is guest artist Erin Turner’s latest work, which is inspired by her leadership in the renovation of Ed Galloway’s Totem in Foyil, Oklahoma. The reception is from 5:30-7:30 Nov. 6.
Oklahoma Visionary Artists, also known as Outsider, Self-Taught, or Contemporary Folk Artists, may not self-identify as artists but embody a dictionary definition of a visionary: “…someone given to fanciful speculations and enthusiasms with little regard for reality.” These artists frequently combine traditional art mediums with found objects, and unconventional techniques. Oklahoma Visionaries are defined as individuals residing in Oklahoma, lacking formal art training, deviating from the mainstream art scene, and guided by a uniquely personal vision. “The primary objective is to honor and raise awareness about preserving Oklahoma’s unique and visionary artwork,” states co-curator Pamela Hodges.
Co-Curated by Steve Liggett and Pamela Hodges, this exhibit travels from LiggettStudios, Tulsa to Modella Gallery, Stillwater (November 6-December 6, 2025), then on to Art Wrecker, gallery Chickasha (February 13 – March 13, 2026); and Museum of the Red River, Idabel (March 24-May 17, 2026).
