(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Jan. 11, 2016) –Stillwater Public Library, Stillwater Police’s Community Outreach Program and City of Stillwater Parks and Recreation are presenting “Self Defense 101,” which will be held in the library’s auditorium on Monday, Jan. 25, from 6:30-8 p.m. LaDell Elliott, owner and founder of Elite Combat Systems, will teach the free class.

The course, being held during January’s National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month, will focus on a few basics of self-defense, specializing in “self-offense.”  Elliott will discuss the importance of having home safety plans, understanding situational awareness and knowing a few simple defensive techniques.

“Most families have a plan for what to do in the case of a tornado,” said Elliott. “But they don’t have a plan for what they would do in the case of a home intruder.”

Elliott has been practicing martial arts for more than 36 years.

“Martial arts is about knowledge, improving yourself and testing your abilities and patience to become the best person that you can be,” said Elliott. “My goal as a martial artist is to remain a student first and an instructor second.”

Participants at the library class will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card toward classes at Elite Combat Systems, which offers self-defense, Jeet Kune Do, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai Kickboxing, Kali/Eskrima, American Boxing, Savate, and Cardio Kickboxing. The first class taken at Elite Combat Systems is always free. Course schedules are available at http://elitecombatsystems.com.

Stillwater Police Officer Tom Comstock will end the program with information on the legal aspects of home invasions. Comstock will also take general questions from audience.

Men, women, and teens ages 12 and up are invited to attend “Self-Defense 101” and registration is required. The class will include some standing and movement while practicing the self-defense techniques, but a high level of physical activity is not expected.
