(STILLWATER, OKLA. / Dec. 16, 2015) –– Science Fiction enthusiasts are invited to join a film and discussion group where they can share their love of the Sci-Fi genre. The Stillwater Public Library will present “The Final Frontier: Science Fiction Film Series,” which will take place Jan. 6-April 6.
Each meeting includes a film screening followed by a discussion. “The Final Frontier” series will examine several films related to the “Star Trek” television series.
“Gene Roddenberry was supposedly inspired by a couple of classic science fiction films while he was writing the Star Trek series,” said Tim Prchal, series host. “We’ll be watching those films and discussing the possible influence they had on Roddenberry’s work. We’ll also watch a wonderful parody film as part of the series.”
The first film will be shown on Jan. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Subsequent films will be screened on the first Wednesday of each month through April 6. By licensing agreement, specific film titles may not be released in media. Interested participants may contact the library’s Help Desk for a list.
“This is the fifth series for the Sci Fi Film Club at the library,” said Paula Long, adult services librarian. “It has been popular, in large part, due to the time Dr. Prchal puts into the film research to make sure we have a lively and enlightening discussion.”
Prchal is the Visiting Professor of English in OSU’s College of Arts & Science, where he teaches popular fiction. He has written a series of speculative-fiction audio dramas called “Marvelous Boxes” and a short story collection titled “Help for the Haunted: A Decade of Vera Van Slyke Ghostly Mysteries.”
The Sci-Fi Film Club series includes PG13 and R films and is intended for people 17 and older. Young adults may attend the R rated films if accompanied by a parent.
