Kids learn healthy habits at library’s ‘Lake Adventure’ April 27
(Stillwater, OK) – The Stillwater Public Library (SPL) is headed to Lake McMurtry on Saturday, April 27, at 1 p.m. to hold its “Lake Adventure” program for children. Children ages 9-11 years old will meet at the lake for the two-hour adventure. The program is part of the library’s health literacy initiative made possible through a health literacy grant from the Oklahoma Department of Libraries and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
“One of the most fun and least inexpensive ways of introducing physical activity to kid’s daily routine is to get them outdoors,” said Elizabeth Murray, children’s librarian. “We are grateful to have the Lake McMurtry staff on board to show children and families activities that will help them enjoy nature healthfully.”
According to Mike Hale, Assistant Director of Lake McMurtry Friends, kids and their caregivers can expect an environment of fun adventure and challenge with a short nature hike, challenge run and a nature-based craft and art installation.
“In a world of screens and treadmills, it is vitally important to viscerally learn that the outside world is not only less expensive, but also loads more stimulating and fun,” Hale said. “Literally a whole world of adventure awaits you.”
Murray says that the library hopes to continue capitalizing on Stillwater’s great outdoor spaces in future health literacy initiatives.
“We are also holding a ‘Lake Adventure’ session for younger kids,” Murray said. “The program filled immediately which tells us that coupling health literacy with our local parks and recreation areas is a recipe for success.”
“Lake Adventure” is free and requires registration. To sign up, go to https://tinyurl.com/LakeAdventure9-11, visit the library or call (405) 372-3633. The program is limited to 20 children, but multiple caregivers may accompany each child. A make-up date in case of inclement weather has been set for May 4.
