(Stillwater, OK) – The Stillwater Public Library and Shred-Away will host their annual free drive-thru document shredding event on Saturday, Feb. 24, from 9-11 a.m., or until the truck is full.

On the day of the event, vehicles will line up in the library’s north parking lot and wind through Prairie Art Center’s parking lot, eventually ending at the shredding truck, where volunteers will help unload boxes and shred documents onsite. Each car may bring two copy-paper-sized boxes of documents to shred. Attendees do not need to remove staples or paper clips.

According to Brenna Gilchrist, adult services librarian, people inquire about the library’s shred event throughout the year.

“It’s one of our most popular events,” Gilchrist said. “We are so fortunate that Shred-Away continues to partner with us to make this event possible.”

For anyone unsure about which documents to destroy and which to keep on file, librarians recommend checking with a trusted accountant or attorney.

“It can be challenging to know what to hang on to and for how long,” Gilchrist said. “When in doubt, it’s always best to check with a professional. The library also has some guidance on our website with links to trusted sources like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).”

The library keeps a page dedicated to the drive-thru shred active all year. Visit stillwaterok.gov/LibraryShred for answers to frequently asked questions about the shred event and helpful resources.

The event is free, but donations will be accepted to help offset the cost of the shredding service. The library also appreciates Prairie Arts Center and the Stillwater Farmers Market for the use of their parking lot, the City of Stillwater’s Traffic Department for supplying safety items and volunteers who help make the event run smoothly.
