(LUBBOCK, Texas /February 22, 2019)—Jacob Fincham-Dukes and the women’s distance medley relay team won Big 12 titles for the Oklahoma State men’s and women’s track teams on the first day of competition at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.

Fincham-Dukes broke his own school record in the long jump to take home his second-career Big 12 title.

He won the event with a mark of 7.99m/26-2.75, beating out Odaine Lewis and Charles Brown of Texas Tech. The Red Raider duo was in the top five on the indoor long jump performance list coming into Friday.

Fincham-Dukes said he knew there would be some tough competition.

“I mean I wasn’t too worried because I jumped 7.90 meters to start, so I knew they’d have to keep up with me,” Fincham-Dukes said. “Even when Odaine (Lewis) jumped 7.92 meters, I wasn’t worried because I thought to myself ‘OK, I know I’m going to beat it.’”

The women’s DMR team took home the conference crown in the event for the fourth time in the past five years.

The Cowgirls won the race wire-to-wire, leading at every handoff of the relay. Johnson ran a 4:51.10 anchor leg to secure the victory.

Assistant coach Cody Halsey said she was excited about the race, especially after the way the race ended in 2018.

“It was so satisfying after last year,” Halsey said. “I was so excited for the girls because a lot of the girls on this year’s team were on the team last year too. They looked like a million bucks. It was awesome.”

Johnson also won the 1,000-meters prelim with a time of 2:48.54. Johnson won her heat and never surrendered the lead.

Johnson said it was a small challenge to regain her energy between the 1,000-meters prelim and the DMR.

“It was a little bit of a hard double,” Johnson said. “We train as endurance athletes, so we’re capable of doubling back like that.”

In the 5,000-meter finals, the Cowboys put three in the top eight and scored 14 team points. Isai Rodriguez finished second to only All-American Edwin Kurgat, Victor Shitsama made his Big 12 Championships debut and finished fifth, and Ayrton Ledesma Fuentes took seventh place to earn All-Big 12 honors.

In the women’s 5,000 meters, Taylor Somers and Molly Born earned All-Big 12 honors with sixth- and seventh-place finishes.

Aaliyah Birmingham broke the school record in the 60 meters for the fourth time this season. She qualified for the final race with a time of 7.30. Her time put her in third overall.

Ashton Hicks and LaKyron Mays both qualified for the 400-meter final. Hicks finished the prelims second in 46.36 and Mays finished seventh with a time of 47.33.

Blake Scott earned All-Big 12 honors, as he tied for seventh in the men’s pole vault. He cleared a season-best height of 5.23m/17-1.75.

The Cowgirls had three athletes qualify for the Mile final. Molly Sughroue, Ariane Ballner and Morgan Szekely made it through to the final Mile race.

Kaylee Dodd qualified for the 800-meter final in her final season. She finished second in her heat and fourth overall with a time of 2:09.74.

Competition resumes Saturday at 11 a.m. with the continuation of the heptathlon. Field events start at 1 p.m. and running events start at 2 p.m.
