(BEAUMONT, Texas / August 23, 2019) – Oklahoma State kicked off the 2019 season with a 3-0 win over Lamar at the Cardinal Classic Thursday night at the LU Soccer Complex.
Jaci Jones, Olyvia Dowell and Gabriella Coleman netted goals for the Cowgirls, and Hannah Warner tallied four saves to post her first-career shutout.
OSU outshot the tourney hosts by a 24-7 margin and also owned an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Jones got the scoring started late in the opening half. Dowell sent a pass ahead to Julia Lenhardt, who quickly found Jones in the box where she sent a low shot to the far post past LU goalie Sandra Nygard to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 advantage.
OSU wasted little time doubling its lead after intermission as in the 52nd minute, Jones dribbled deep into LU territory before delivering a pass to Dowell at the top of the box. And the freshman converted, smashing a ball into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal and a 2-0 lead for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls nearly added to their lead in the 65th minute after drawing a foul in the box and being awarded a penalty kick. But Kim Rodriguez’ attempt was denied by a diving Nygard to keep the OSU advantage at two.
Coleman would provide OSU’s third goal in the 81st minute, taking a pass from Dowell before beating her defender and Nygard and converting a tap-in opportunity.
OSU concludes play at the Cardinal Classic Sunday against UTSA, which opened its season with a 3-0 win over Louisiana.
