(STILLWATER, Oklahoma / January 19, 2019) – Oklahoma State’s men’s tennis team won its season-opening matches by a combined score of 14-0, on Saturday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.

The Cowboys (2-0) defeated Omaha (0-1) and Creighton (0-1) by scores of 7-0.

The Pokes improved to 12-1 in season-opening matches under head coach Jay Udwadia.

“It's been a while since we’ve played last, so everyone was really excited to play. We came out with good energy,” Udwadia said. “We always like to start out with two matches. Playing two matches makes us sharper.”

The tandems of Luke Hammond and Mathieu Scaglia took the first doubles point of the season, defeating Omaha’s Matt Dunn and Ethan Henry, 6-4. Artur Dubinski and Matej Vocel followed with a 6-3 victory over Nathan Reekie and Abdoul Ouattara, to claim the doubles point for the Cowboys.

In singles, the Cowboys dominated Omaha. Five of the six Cowboys won in straight sets, while Mathieu Scaglia won in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 1-6 (11-9), over Omaha’s Davis Lawley.

“For myself, I started out pretty bad today,” Scaglia said. “The first match in singles was not great but I picked it up and played well in the second match. I'm pretty happy about that and to be back for the start of the season."

In the second match of the day, the Pokes started quick again, with the tandems of Dubinski/Tybar and Hudd/Scaglia recording wins to take the doubles point.

In singles, Dubinski and Scaglia made quick work of their opponents, winning in straight sets. Freshman Emile Hudd also saw his first collegiate action in singles play and defeated Creighton’s Mac Mease, 6-3, 7-5.

"I thought I started out slightly slow in the doubles against Omaha,” Hudd said.  “As the day went on, with the great guys around me, it became a lot easier. Toward the end, I started playing well and it was good to get that first singles win.”

The Cowboys will face Arkansas (4-0) in a battle of undefeated teams Monday at 1 p.m. at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
