(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / June 15, 2023) – The Stillwater Public Library (SPL) invites science fiction movie fans to join a film and discussion group where they can share their love of the sci-fi genre. Sci-Fi Film Club is a movie-watching group that meets on the third Thursday of each month. The theme changes seasonally, and for the summer, the topic is “Comedy in Space,” where all feature films take place in space or feature a science fiction element.
Sci-Fi Film Club, which has been meeting at the library since 2014, is a group dedicated to sharing their love of science fiction films and having lively discussions. All movies will be free and open to the public; however, anyone under 18 must attend with a parent or guardian.
Jordan Stine, adult services librarian at SPL, hopes the combination of comedy and science fiction will attract fans of both movie genres to the group.
“Picking comedy films was a prevalent choice among the attendees at the final Sci-Fi Film Club meeting last spring, Stine explained. “We hope to branch out by choosing new themes to welcome new members interested in watching exciting sci-fi movies while also getting some laughs in.”
The first film in the series shows on June 15 and features a cult hit from the 1980s that tells the story of a football player who accidentally travels to a fictional planet and fights a tyrannous king to save Earth. Then, on July 20, the Club will watch its second film, an 80s classic about a high schooler who travels back in time to make sure his parents meet and fall in love to keep his timeline intact. The summer theme concludes on August 17 with a beloved 90s movie about the cast members of a fictional space opera television series who must reprise their fictional roles to defend Earth and an alien race from a group of reptilian conquerors. All films are rated PG and have a run time of under two hours.
According to attendee Amber Young, the Sci-Fi Film Club is the library program she looks forward to the most.
“The best part of the group is how welcoming everyone is,” Young said. “These films are some of my favorites, and having a place to talk about them while discussing how silly they motivate me to come to the next program.”
The Sci-Fi Film Club invites anyone from the public to attend these films for laughs, snacks and discussion. The screenings will have popcorn and drinks provided by the Friends of the Stillwater Public Library. Attendees are also welcome to bring their own refreshments.
Visit library.stillwater.org/register.php to sign-up and for more information about the film series, including titles and ratings. Registration is optional, but librarians encourage attendees to register so they can receive reminder emails and updates.
